Who granted it
Two Mexican institutions, one small room in Al Barsha.
The Embassy of Mexico in the United Arab Emirates is Mexico's diplomatic mission to the UAE. The Academia Mexicana de la Gastronomía is Mexico's gastronomy academy. Together, under the programme México · Viaje a través de los sabores — a journey through the flavours — they granted Querida Mexican and Friends Restaurant a Reconocimiento: an official recognition.
It is a recognition, not a ranking and not a competition. It says, simply, that the Embassy and the Academy consider the cooking in this room to be Mexican gastronomy carried abroad with quality and authenticity. We are grateful, and quietly proud. Mama Lalis most of all.

At the table
The same table, the same cooking.
Nothing changes on the plate, and that is the point. The cooking is Mama Lalis' recipes from Monclova, Coahuila, cooked the way her family cooks them. Corn tortillas pressed by hand. A kitchen that is halal throughout, with no alcohol on the menu. Twenty-six seats in a small room painted hot pink, lime and orange, where you can walk in without a reservation.
The certificate is on the wall. The rest is on the table.
