Issue 04 — Guanajuato, The Heartland of Independence

The fourth volume moves Querida into the highlands — Guanajuato, the silver city that dreams on two levels. Above ground: glowing cantera stone façades, leafy plazas, and narrow alleys where a whispered word carries across a gap. Below ground: a labyrinth of tunnels carved beneath the mountains, the city’s oldest secret.

Place of Frogs

Long before the Spanish silver barons cut their mines into the mountains, the Purépecha named this rugged terrain Quanaxhuato — “Place of Frogs” — for the rock formations that rise from the surrounding hillsides. It is the birthplace of the cry for independence, the art capital of Latin America, and home to the cajeta, the strawberries, and the callejón kiss that every Mexican knows.

The same duality, on the plate

Cooking at Querida follows Guanajuato’s exact rhythm. On the surface, colour and craft; underneath, the slow, patient work that makes it real. Thirty-six pages, photographed and drawn, from the heartland of Mexico to Talal 14 in Al Barsha.
