I learned to cook from my mother in Monclova.

I taught my son, Obed, in that same kitchen — the comal, the chiles, the patient broth. Querida is everything cooked for the people we love, brought to a quiet street in Al Barsha. The room is small. The pots are big.

We've saved a seat for you at the family table.

Pasen, por favor.

Me la enseñó mi abuela y yo se la enseñé a mis hijos.

My grandmother taught it to me, and I taught it to my children.

Sobremesa

Stay a little longer.

In Mexico we have a word for the time you spend at the table after the meal is done — sobremesa. The coffee. The second salsa. The story you only tell when nobody's rushing. There's no English word for it, but you'll know it when you feel it.

Mi casa, tu casa.
